The San Francisco World Spirits Competition is now accepting entries for its 2018 judging, which will take place April 13 through 15.

Founded in 2000, the San Francisco World Spirits Competition (SFWSC) has firmly established itself as the spirits industry’s most influential competition, with an international reputation for integrity and impartiality. This year, more than 40 renowned and respected judges will taste several thousand entries from around the world, bestowing coveted SFWSC Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Double Gold medals on the best of them.

Entrants can enter their products online or download entry materials from the Competition’s newly designed website at www.sfspiritscomp.com. The deadline for entries is Friday, March 16.

Judges will taste more than 100 entry spirits categories, which this year have been expanded to reflect the latest trends impacting the spirits industry:

  • New Whisk[e]y Categories: New official Competition categories include Single Grain Whisk[e]y, Other Single Malt Whisk[e]y, and Irish Poitin.
  • New Gin Categories: In response to a dramatic increase in the number of Gin entries in 2017 — up from 199 in 2016 to 268 in 2017—this year’s expanded Gin categories will include Genever, Old Tom Gin, and Barrel-Aged Gin.
  • Expanded Non-alcoholic/Mixer Categories: Reflecting a growing consumer interest in cocktails and mixology, the 2018 SFWSC will be accepting cocktail products such as Bitters and Syrups for judging.

The SFWSC’s Founder and Executive Director, Anthony Dias Blue, is a James Beard award-winning radio host and Editor-in-Chief of The Tasting Panel, The SOMM Journal, and The Clever Root magazines and also presides over the San Francisco International Wine Competition and New York World Wine and Spirits Competition. “Modern Mixologist” and leading bar professional, Tony Abou-Ganim, is the Competition’s Director of Judging. Blue and Abou-Ganim have curated a panel of judges of the industry's top personalities, including “King Cocktail” Dale DeGroff; author and historian David Wondrich; and Doug Frost, one of only four candidates to have achieved both Master of Wine and Master Sommelier status, as well as Master of Spirits bestowed by Wine Spectator. “We are proud to be the largest and most respected competition in the U.S.,” says Mr. Blue. “No other competition combines the integrity, depth of judging expertise, and quantity and variety of spirits as the San Francisco World Spirits Competition. Over the course of the three-day competition we identify the very best spirits in the world across every major category. History has shown that winning a San Francisco World Spirits Competition medal can instantly put a brand on the map.”
